The Eagles were led by senior first baseman Chase Townsend, who was 3-5 with two singles, a triple, one run scored and one RBI. Ripon scores 8 in last two innings for win
Ripon (4-1) got together with Drew (1-4) Wednesday for what turned out to be an offensive explosion for both teams. The two squads combined for 29 runs and 32 hits, but it was the Red Hawks that got the last laugh, scoring eight runs in the final two innings for the 15-14 victory. Bryant Bullock turned out to be the hero, delivering a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth, which drove in the final two runs of the game. With Drew leading 14-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Ripon made their move. Their eighth inning rally was started by a one-out walk to Nate Paul. He would come around to score on the next at-bat, a double by Alex Duros. After Brett Wegner singled to put runners on the corners, Gillespie duplicated his earlier feat, crushing a three-run home run over the left field wall, bringing Ripon to within three runs. Ripon's ninth inning was again started with one out, when Nick Whitty doubled to left center. One batter and one swing of the bat later, it was a one-run game, as Nate Paul hit his first home run as a member of the Red Hawks. Duros followed that with another double, which was followed by a walk to Will Gillis. After those two runners advanced one base on a passed ball, Drew intentionally walked Gillespie, fearing he would hurt them a third time. One batter later, Bullock hurt them just as bad, delivering the walk-off double to give Ripon the improbable come-from-behind victory.

Ostrowski reaches milestone
John Ostrowski is just the ninth person in NCAA Division III history to amass 800 victories at the same school
John Ostrowski is just the ninth person in NCAA Division III history to amass 800 victories at the same school
In the 2008 season opener for Benedictine baseball team, veteran head coach John Ostrowski (36th season) wasted no time in reaching a place few NCAA Division III coaches have gone before: 800 career victories. Entering the year with a mark of 799-630-15 at Benedictine, Ostrowski joined the elite 800-win club when his team defeated Eastern Nazarene College, 12-11 in 12 innings, in the opening game on its annual spring trip to Ft. Myers, Florida.

Ostrowski – or "O" as he is known by to most of his players and those in the BU community ranks sixth in terms of most victories by an active NCAA III coach.

Ostrowski has brought the Eagles' program a long way since victory No. 1 back in 1973 (a 4-3 squeaker over the University of Montevallo). Ostrowski has guided Benedictine teams to 24 winning seasons, including 18 consecutive above the .500 plateau between 1987-2004. He has 26 seasons with 20-plus victories. Under Ostrowski's tutelage, Benedictine has amassed 15 conference championships and been in the league's top-two 29 times in his previous 35 campaigns. His teams have made seven NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

"(800 wins) means a lot of great memories," said a reflective Ostrowski. "I've been blessed in so many ways to be a part of an institution like Benedictine, which is an easy sell when you're recruiting. 800 wins brings a lot of perspective back. As I look back at so many memories, I remember a lot of the homeruns, the great pitched games, a lot of NCAA and NAIA tournament appearances, as well as the chance to coach my own son (Ted, 2005-07). They are all great memories!"

Breaking a tie for first place in the Northwest Conference with Willamette, George Fox (8-3) swept a doubleheader from the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers 7-2 and 12-8 Saturday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex. In the first game, the Bruins needed a five-run rally in the 8th inning of the opener to overcome the Pios, who held a 2-1 lead throughout most of the game. Mark Putney (1-1) got the win with three innings of shutout relief, allowing only one hit while fanning two and walking one. Smiley surrendered nine hits in 7.2 innings with six K's and three walks in taking the setback. Game two was a back and forth afair as George Fox and Lewis & Clark traded leads. A six-run sixth inning sent the Bruins ahead for good.

Pacific used a six-hit afternoon from Jeff Johnston and a four-hit pitching performance from Blaine Knuth to beat defending Northwest Conference champion Pacific Lutheran in a baseball doubleheader Saturday at Joe Etzel Field. In the opener, Johnston scored two runs, including one on Nick McNeely's game-winning homer to score a 4-3 first game victory. In the nightcap, Knuth held the Lutes to just four hits in eight innings of work as the Boxers posted an 11-1 victory.
