Jason Christenberry recorded his 17th career win for York on Friday.
Jason Christenberry recorded his 17th career win for York on Friday.
Big inning lifts York
York used an eight run third inning to roll to a 9-1 victory in their 2010 season opener at LaGrange. The Spartans (1-0) earned the first win in a season opener since York recorded a win over Juniata in 2006.

The Spartans got on the board in the top of the first as Dustin Worthman led off the game with a double to left center and scored on a Matt Monti sacrifice fly to center.

York got a key defensive play in the bottom of the second as Mike Connolly gunned down Jordan Martinec at home plate ending the inning and keeping the Panthers (5-4) off the board.

The Spartans then had some good fortune as they used six hits and took advantage of three LaGrange errors to put eight runs on the board. C.T. Stanley had a two-run single in the inning while Connolly stroked an RBI double to right center. Rob Klinck, Joe Doyle, Jim Meehan and Worthman each added an RBI in the frame.

That would be more than enough for Spartan ace Jason Christenberry as he cruised through seven innings of work. He worked out of trouble in the second and seventh innings but didn't really have any other problems in the game. He struck out nine, walked three and allowed just three hits in his season-opening stint.

Robby Williams suffered the loss for LaGrange as he allowed all nine runs on seven his with one strikeout in his two-plus innings of work. The Panther bullpen was solid after Williams' departure as they combined to shutout the Spartans over the final seven innings but the damage was already done.

Worthman, Connolly, and Meehan led the 10-hit Spartan attack with two knocks each. Worthman scored two runs and drove in another while Connolly and Meehan each had an RBI and a run scored. Stanley was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored for York.

Miles Lee and Kevin Bowman each had a pair of hits for the Panthers. Luis Perez had LaGrange's lone RBI with his bases loaded hit by pitch.

In other action: In the first contest of the season between ranked teams, Chapman got the better of Pomona-Pitzer sending the Sagehens to a 8-4 loss.

Rhodes used a four run fourth to defeated Emory 5-3 in their first game of the Rawlings Classic. Austin Carden picked up his second victory of the year, as Hunter Chandler picked up his second save of the season.

In the North Park 2010 season opener, Mike Giovenco struck out 12 batters while allowing only one earned run as the Vikings defeated host Atlanta Christian 6-3. Angel Carrasco and Mike Domenick each hit two-run home runs while Joel Bonnett worked two scoreless frames to pick up the save.

Mississippi College righthander Tyler Seaman threw seven strong innings to lead the Choctaws (6-1) to a 9-1 win over visiting Concordia Texas (4-4) at Frierson Field. Seaman allowed just one unearned run on five hits in seven innings of work to hold the Concordia bats in check. Bo Bell hit his third home run this season and drove in a pair of runs on two hits. Brannon Walls picked up his first homer this year.

Daniel Moore went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored to help lead North Carolina Wesleyan to a 19-9 victory over Randolph-Macon at Bauer Field. Twelve different Bishops combined for 20 hits on the day as North Carolina Wesleyan scored at least two runs in six of the team's eight at-bats.

Redlands assembled an impressive offensive showcase against Cal Lutheran at The Yard in Redlands, downing the Kingsmen by a 13-4 final in SCIAC action. Cal Lutheran scored first off of a Jordan Ott two-run bomb to center in the top half of the third, but the Bulldogs' six-run effort in the bottom of the frame would dig the Kingsmen in a hole from which they could not escape.

Chapman faces Pomona-Pitzer in west region showdown
By Travis Cross for D3baseball.com

Today, Pomona-Pitzer gets their first opportunity to rid themselves of the bad taste they've had in their mouths since last May, that is, if the rain doesn't wash out the games first.

No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer (6-2) swept the season series from 7th-ranked Chapman (7-1) in 2009 before dropping a winners-bracket game to the Panthers in the West Regional. The annual three-game series starts today, pending rain, at Pomona-Pitzer at 2:00 p.m. PST with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

"Hopefully the brooms sweep our way this year"," says Chapman third baseman Bobby Evers.

Both Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman have elite offenses, as we'll look at later, but first let's glance at the pitching staffs who have compiled team ERAs of 2.59 and 2.19 respectively. Friday's match up sees D3baseball.com preseason All-American David Colvin (2-0, 1.00 ERA, 26 SO) taking the mound against Jordan Sigman (2-0, 0.00 ERA).

Follow D3baseball.com on Twitter
"Chapman's always one of the best teams in the nation," says Colvin. "I've been looking forward to facing them since last year when they knocked us out."

"[Colvin and I] pitched against each other last year and it was a very good game," says Sigman. "I expect a highly competitive game that will come down to the little things."

Colvin and Sigman will take a seat on the bench Saturday to watch Pomona-Pitzer's James Brunswick (2-1, 4.20 ERA) vs. Kevin Dwyer (2-0, 1.50 ERA) in the first game; the second game's starters, however, are less certain. The Sagehens will likely turn to Leo Rosetti (1-1, 4.50 ERA) to take the ball against either Travis McGee (1-0, 0.82 ERA) or Brian Rauh (2-0, 4.91 ERA, 17 SO) with the odd man out starting Chapman's Sunday game against Willamette.

Of the Panther's three rookie starters this weekend, two are freshmen.

"They'll be a little nervous and anxious, but once they get on the mound they're going to realize it's just another game," says Chapman first basemen Matt Luzar.

Luzar (.472, 2 HR, 14 RBI) knows firsthand of the freshman pressure on the mound: he had 12 starts as a freshman in 2007 and 24 career starts before moving to first base this year. He currently leads the team in batting average, hits, home runs, and RBI.

"We know these are big games for us, especially as an Independent," Luzar adds. "We are preparing at full-speed; every game is versus the best team in the nation."

Pomona-Pitzer is quite aware of the stakes as well.

"This is our first real challenge to see where we stand on the national level," shortstop James Kang said.

After dropping the first two games of their season against Westmont, the Sagehens have put together a six-game win streak during which they have outscored opponents 99-12. They've been paced by Kang (.621, 3 HR, 11 RBI) and first baseman Nick Frederick (.586, 1 HR, 14 RBI).

"I like controlling the pace of the game," says Kang, who is hitting out of the leadoff hole for the Sagehens.

"[Pomona-Pitzer] has guys that can hurt you," says Evers. "They're dangerous, especially at their place."

Chapman is also in the midst of a four-game win streak outscoring opponents 44-11.

Someone's win-streak will come to an end this weekend, but who's will it be? Both teams boast high-powered offenses and elite pitching. Each wants to prove they belong in the top-15 and the conversation for who is "Appleton worthy". There's history and camaraderie, bad blood and passion. What more could you ask for?

Oh, that's right, how about a little sun?

Other players to watch: Chapman: C Joe Lehman (.462, 7 2B, 12 RBI), LF James Parr (.455, 1 HR, 11 RBI), Pomona-Pitzer: DH Nick Gentilli (.462, 1 HR, 9 RBI).

With Brad Orosey going nine strong innings and striking out 10, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs provided their ace with a four-run 10th frame to defeat Texas-Tyler 5-1 on Friday evening. At Texas-Tyler's Irwin Field, Orosey (3-0) followed up his seven-inning no-hitter last Saturday against Southwestern by keeping the Texas-Tyler bats quiet for most of the night. Methodist jumped out to an early lead Friday night and did not look back in a 14-2 victory that was called after seven innings. The chill in the air at Hart Park on Friday did nothing to cool down the Chapman bats. The Panthers swept a doubleheader from visiting McMurry, scoring 23 runs in the two games and winning 13-4 and 10-3 to improve to 6-1 overall this season. No. 7-ranked Chapman has scored in double figures in six of its first seven games this spring and is hitting .412 as a team. Meanwhile, it's all been more than enough for the Panthers' pitching staff which has allowed just a 2.36 team earned run average in 61 innings thus far.

For the first time in four years Cal Lutheran lost its conference opener doing so on Friday afternoon at home to Occidental by a 7-5 margin. The Kingsmen missed out on three game-tying opportunities over the last three innings as Occidental continued its recent success over the Kingsmen.

Averett held off Bridgewater (Va) in the late innings to notch an 11-9 victory on Thursday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field. In a game that featured plenty of offense, Averett (4-2) used a four-run fifth inning to come from behind and take the lead for good.

The Cougars led 6-4 through four innings, but they surrendered four runs in the top of the fifth to fall behind 8-6. That deficit didn't last long, however, as Kyle Newcomb's RBI double and James Carter's RBI single tied the game up. Averett went ahead on Matt Mitchell's two-run single through the right side.

With Bridgewater (1-2) threatening in the top of the ninth, Chase Hall came in and shut down the Eagles by inducing a double play to end the game.

Hall picked up the save as senior Jake Loye earned his first career victory on the mound. Alex Foltz took the loss for Bridgewater.

Averett pounded out 13 hits, including three by Newcomb and Carter. Drew Easter led the Eagle offense with two runs scored and three RBIs.
