Coach Scappa gets 100th win, Spartans hit 1000 victories

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The York College baseball team closed out their 2017 spring trip with a historic day as the Green and White swept a split doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Spartans defeated John Jay 17-3 in the opener as the victory was the 1,000 win in program history. It also marked the 100th win for head coach Mike Scappa. The Spartans closed the trip with a 9-6 win over Lehman in the nightcap. The Spartans finished their season opening jaunt to South Carolina with a mark of 4-2.

Mike Scappa's 100th win as head coach for the Spartans was also the 1000th win for the program.

How It Happened

• The Spartans got off to another quick start with a single run in the bottom of the first followed by a two run bottom of the third.

• The Bloodhounds got a single run in the top of the sixth but the Green and White exploded with a six-run bottom of the sixth to take an 9-1 lead. The Spartans got their first run on a bases loaded walk to Zach Hossler. The next run came home on a Seth Brosius single. Collin Crowell scored York's third run of the inning on a wild pitch. Hossler scored one a Michael Moore sacrifice fly to center followed by Brosius coming home on a wild pitch. The final run of the frame came on a Logan Countryman RBI single.

• After John Jay scored a run in the top of the seventh, the Spartans got two runs to take an 11-2 lead. The Green and White put the game away with a six run bottom of the eighth. The Bloodhounds closed out the scoring with a single run in the top of the ninth.

How It Happened

• Lehman jumped on the Spartans with three runs in the bottom of the first to seize control of the game.

• York got on the board in the top of the third as Zach Hossler drove in Grant Oberholtzer with an RBI ground out.

• York added a single run in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Bryce Stout RBI double to left center as the Spartans cut their deficit to 3-2.

• The Spartans took the lead for good in the top of the fifth as Michael Moore stroked a two run double to right center as York led 4-3.

• York made it 8-3 with a four run top of the sixth inning. The Spartans got their four runs on just two hits and a key Lehman error.

• Lehman trimmed York's lead to 8-6 with a three spot in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Spartans closed out the scoring with a single run in the top of the ninth on an Oberholtzer RBI single.



The win over John Jay set a pair of milestones as it was the 1,000 win in the history of the program while the win was also the 100th for head coach Mike Scappa … the Spartans are now 1,001-702-6 all-time in 49 seasons of varsity baseball … Scappa's 100th win comes in his sixth season as head coach … Scappa has been a part of 508 of the 1,001 all-time Spartan wins … Scappa was a player from 1995-98, an assistant coach from 1999-2011, and now head coach since 2012 … the Spartans have started the season 4-2 in four of Scappa's six seasons at the helm of the program … York hit .313 as a team on the trip while they averaged 8.3 runs per game … York banged out 19 doubles in the six games … York was 8-for-8 in stolen bases for the trip … The Spartan pitching staff fashioned a 3.23 ERA in 53 innings while the staff struck out 55 and walked 33 … The Spartan hitters struck out just 33 times while they drew 27 walks … The Spartans were hit by 13 pitches during the trip … York begins a season-high five game home stand on Tuesday.



The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they are slated to make their 2017 home debut as they will host Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference tilt. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm at Jaquet Field.
