Pointers and Tommies start tourneys with wins

Kris Edwards pitched a four-hit shutout and J.D. Dorgan’s
double drove in the only run of the game Friday as St. Thomas
opened the MIAC playoff with a 1-0 win over St. John’s at
Veterans Field in Minnetonka. Edwards scattered four hits, struck
out seven and had twice as many strikes as balls in out dueling
Brett Kramer and shutting out the Johnnies for the second time this
season. Edwards also defeated St. John’s 5-0 last month in
Collegeville.
Junior Austin Blaski fired a two-hit shutout to lead No. 1
Marietta into the 2011 OAC Championship Game with a 4-0 victory
over No. 9 Heidelberg at Don Schaly Stadium. Blaski, the 2010
Kent Tekulve OAC Pitcher of the Year, overcame four walks and
struck out three to improve to 9-2. Sylvester Nino (5-3) took the
loss after allowing four runs on five hits in six and one-third
innings. He walked five and fanned four.
The Keystone Giants are heading back to the CSAC title game, as the
Giants breezed by Immaculata 12-2 in a winner's bracket game.
Blaine O'Brien worked eight innings of three hit ball, allowing one
earned run, to pick up the victory. The Giants, who are in pursuit
of their third consecutive conference crown, will play on Saturday
for a chance to return to the NCAA tournament.

The #1 seed Penn State
Altoona Lions claimed their second win in as many games in the 2011
AMCC Tournament, defeating #3 seed Penn State Behrend 12-2 at
Stewart Athletic Field. In their second game of the day, Penn State
Behrend defeated #4 seed Medaille 11-3 in the second game on
Friday to stay alive and force a rematch with Altoona in the
AMCC title game.
Friday the 13th didn't bring bad luck to Franklin, in fact, the
Grizzlies' post-season fortunes have taken a real turn for the
better. For the first time ever, Franklin has
advanced to the championship game of the HCAC
double-elimination championship tournament via the winner's
bracket. Franklin rallied, scoring four runs in the top of the
eighth inning, and held on to topple top-seeded and host Manchester
9-7 in the first of three tourney contests today.
UW-Whitewater set a WIAC Tournament record for runs scored
in a 21-2 win over UW-Oshkosh in the opening game of the
tournament. The twenty-one runs is the most UW-Whitewater has
scored this season, topping the previous high of 19 the Warhawks
scored May 1 in a win at UW-Oshkosh. It is the most runs
Whitewater has scored since totaling 22 in a win over Oshkosh April
28, 2010 in Whitewater. After blasting UW-Oshkosh, the Warhawks fell
to host UW-Stevens Point 6-5 in the second game of the
day. The tournament uses a double-elimination format so
UW-Whitewater remains alive and will play UW-Oshkosh again Saturday
with the Pointes awaiting the winner.
The 24th-ranked and No. 3 seeded Thomas More defeated Washington and Jefferson 10-5 and Westminster (Pa.) 11-4 in the oping day of the President's Athletic Conference. Andrew Thole hit a home run in both games as the junior first baseman led the Saints with a 4-for-8, 5 RBI day. With the wins, the Saints advance to the championship game.
