Babson, Wheaton share NEWMAC crown

Wheaton (Mass.) entered Saturday needing a sweep over WPI
combined with an MIT loss to Clark and got both, as the Lyons
claimed their 12th NEWMAC regular season title in the league's
13-year history and the top seed in next week's double-elimination
tournament with 17-0 and 9-4 victories at Sidell Stadium.
Wheaton shares the regular season crown with Babson who lost a
non-conference tilt with Bates 6-7. MIT dropped to third with a 1-0
loss to the Clark Couogars. MIT rebounded with a 12-6 win to
cap its NEWMAC season.
The Texas-Tyler Patriots swept a doubleheader from Mississippi
College to claim their fifth-consecutive ASC-East Division
Championship and lock down the top seed and home field advantage in
the ASC Championship Tournament. The Patriots rebounded from a 14-8
loss on Friday to win the series with 3-1 and 1-0 victories. In the
early game, the Patriots appeared headed for defeat as Mississippi
College's Ryan Glover held the Patriots hitless through five
complete innings. Texas-Tyler offense finally found its groove in
the bottom of the sixth and scored three runs, enough runs for
Patriot starter Matt Schimpf. In the rubber game, Kory Cleveland
ruled the day, tossing a complete game, eight strikeout performance
to earn his seventh win of the season.
Kean picked up their 25th win of the season as they
defeated Richard Stockton, 6-1, in NJAC action. Lee Cavico was
4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI while senior Chris Carrano was
3-for-5 with a run scored. On the mound junior Mike Russo
earned the win with seven and two thirds innings of work.
Russo allowed one run, it was unearned, and five hits.
Mark McCormack collected three hits and scored two runs while
James Dalton tossed 7.1 strong innings to lead the UMass-Boston
past No. 9 Eastern Connecticut State , 8-3, in game one of a Little
East Conference baseball doubleheader at Yetten Field in Waltham,
MA. The win for the Beacons snapped the Warriors nine-game winning
streak and while also handing them their first conference loss of
the 2011 campaign. Eastern Connecticut rebounded with a strong game
two pitching performance from senior Jim Schult to take an 8-1
decision and salvage the spilt.

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Hart took the hill for No. 21 Redlands,
matching his season-high eight innings while giving up only two
runs on three hits against Cal Lutheran. Beyond fanning four
Kingsmen en route to his eighth straight victory, Hart's strong
start gave the Bulldogs plenty of comfort, which led to a solid
10-2 performance in Thousand Oaks.
Tufts ended up with three victories on Saturday after winning a
game that was postponed because of darkness on Friday and then
sweeping the regularly scheduled doubleheader against Colby in
NESCAC East Division action at Coombs Field. With the series sweep,
the Jumbos secureda spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
Coach John Casey's Jumbos have not lost since returning from their
spring break trip, and have won 12 in a row overall. The teams
finished what they started on Friday by playing the 10th inning of
the postponed game and 25th-ranked Tufts scored two runs to earn
the 11-9 victory. The Jumbos then won 4-3 and 10-4 in the other
contests.
Mitchell scored a combined 28 runs on 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Elms, finishing with 19-9 and 9-3 victories to remain atop the NECC standings. The Mariners never trailed at any point in either contest. Freshman Anthony Santiago and junior John Apostolo powered the Mitchell offense. Santiago went 6-for-9 with a double, three RBI and six runs scored on the day while Apostolo went 5-for-8 with a double, homer, five RBI and four runs scored.
Strong pitching made the difference for Pacific and Whitworth in
their doubleheader as both teams received complete game wins to split
their Northwest Conference baseball games at Chuck Bafaro
Stadium. Pacific’s Rob Dittrick threw his fourth complete
game of the season, allowing just four hits to earn his eighth win
as the Boxers took the opener 2-0. It was Whitworth’s
Eric Anderson going the distance in the nightcap, throwing a
three-hitter to give the Pirates an 8-2 win.
Senior Patrick Quinn pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 1 of
a doubleheader for Salve Regina as the Seahawks
split a TCCC twinbill with Endicott on a cold, windy day in
Newport. Salve Regina won the opener, 4-0, before Endicott took the
nightcap, 7-2.

On a day when the weather was lousy, the Adrian College baseball team was far from it in a pair of wins against Alma College on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored a season-high 17 runs in game one for a 17-1 win and followed that with an 8-0 win in the nightcap. 11 different players had a hit in game one as the Bulldogs racked up 20 hits. The team had seven doubles, three triples and a home run among those 20 knocks. In the nightcap Sophomores Zach Robbins and Lucas Willitzer combined to hold the Scots scoreless and gave up just four hits in the lobsided win.
With just two players producing runs for Central, the Dubuque hushed the Dutch offense as Central suffered 4-3 setback. It was a pitcher's duel most of the game, with both hurlers throwing similar complete-game efforts allowing eight hits and walking three. Dubuque's Paul Krenger fanned 10 batters and Ryan Goetzinger (4-2) struck out six.
Junior Roberto Valenti drove a double down the left-field line to drive in two runs that capped off a three-run eighth-inning rally that gave the Southern Maine a 14-13 victory over Rhode Island in the second game of the teams Little East Conference baseball doubleheader at the USM Baseball Stadium. In the opener, Rhode Island used the strong pitching performance of Gary Levesque and C.J. Tsoumakas to an 8-3 victory.
Defiance was four outs from a series-opening victory at Anderson
but saw the host Ravens rally for a 7-5 victory in game one, before
shutting out the Jackets, 14-0, in the second game of the
doubleheader. A pair of early homers in both game from Pat
Warrington and Adam Northup lifted Southern Vermont in two road
wins over Lesley, 12-5 and 12-6, on a chilly Saturday afternoon at
Trum Field.
Bridgewater State (Mass.) swept a MASCAC doubleheader with
Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park.
Bridgewater won the first game, 3-1, and completed the sweep with a
4-0 victory in the nightcap.
