Junior Brian Gasser threw the 20th no-hitter in the program
history as No. 3 Marietta swept Baldwin-Wallace in an OAC baseball
doubleheader Thursday at Heritage Field. The Pioneers won game one
7-1 and then took game two 5-1.
Gasser scattered one run, two walks and a hit batter while
striking out seven during his historical performance. The leader of
the nation's top pitching staff improved to 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA.
Marietta's last no-hitter came from Mike DeMark against Thiel on
March 21, 2004. A day earlier, Mike Mooney accomplished the same
feat against Ohio Wesleyan.
Despite having their OAC opener postponed five straight days, the
Pioneers (17-2, 2-0 OAC) showed little sign up rust against the
Yellow Jackets (11-8, 1-3 OAC).
The Etta Express, who pounded out 14 hits, sent nine men to the
plate and produced five hits, including three for extra bases, to
take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Jordan Grilliot led
off with a single, and junior Kirby Becker followed with a double,
before senior John Snyder drove in Grilliot with a groundout.
Junior Tim Saunders then hit a RBI triple, and senior Casey Levens
(Dayton/Centerville) plated him with another groundout. Senior
Britt Meador singled and scored on a double by sophomore Aaron
Hopper.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Becker and Snyder helped Marietta
stretch its advantage to 6-0 in the fourth. Grilliot then plated
Toth with a single to make it 7-0 in the fifth.
Baldwin-Wallace pieced together a hit-by-pitch, walk, stolen base
and RBI ground out to score its lone run in the bottom of the
fifth.
Six different Pioneers had multiple hits, including Saunders who
went 3-for-4 and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Snyder also
had two hits and drove in two runs.
