Salve Regina's Brandon Bursie threw the fifth no-hitter of the
weekend in a 17-0 whitewashing of the Curry Colonels. With
the no-no, Salve Regina split its baseball doubleheader with Curry,
losing the opener 8-6 in eight innings.
Bursie gave up six walks, while striking out 13 in his seven
innings on the mound. Michael Connery took the loss, giving up four
runs in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
The Seahawks scored nine of their 17 runs in the first inning,
highlighted by a two-run home run to left off the bat of Matarazzo.
The scoring was spread out through the rest of the game, scoring
two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in
the sixth.
Bursie joins Davin Sirpenski, a 2007 graduate, as the only Seahawk
pitchers to throw complete-game no-hitters. Sirpenski also threw
his no-no in the back-end of a conference twinbill when he beat
Anna Maria on April 7, 2004. Sirpenski also took part in a combined
no-hitter when the Seahawks blanked Nichols, 4-0, in the opener of
a conference doubleheader on April 29, 2007. Matt Palmisano started
and was relieved by Nicholas Zambrotta in the 4th while Sirpenski
closed the game in the 7th.
The Colonels now stand at 11-15 overall and 7-9 in the conference,
while the Seahawks are 12-13 overall and 8-4 in TCCC play.
