Texas-Dallas defeated ASC-East rival Texas-Tyler as the Comets
blanked the third ranked Patriots, 7-0, in the first game of a
divisional weekend set at the UTD Baseball Field. It was
Texas-Tyler's first loss after a 22-0 start to the season.
Sophomore right-hander Derek Dallas became the first six-game
winner in the ASC and tossed the first shutout by the Comets in
over three years, limiting the Patriots to just three singles.
Meanwhile, the Comet hitters pieced together 10 hits (including a
pair of home runs), and played flawless defense in breaking a
23-game Tyler win streak that dated back to last season. Dallas was
almost untouchable, as the Ballinger native fanned six Texas-Tyler
batters without issuing a walk.
Defiance ran into a streaking Rose-Hulman squad and suffered a
6-1 setback in the HCAC opener for both squads. The win was the
sixth-straight for the Engineers since they returned from Florida
and cooled a Yellow Jacket squad, which had posted victories in two
of their last three outings entering the weekend series.
Rose-Hulman led throughout by scoring in each of the first three
innings. The big rally came in the third frame, where the Engineers
pushed three across to open up a 5-0 advantage and control of the
game.
Waynesburg picked a perfect time to snap a 10-game losing streak. Under frigid cold conditions, the Yellow Jackets opened up conference play with a 4-1 victory over visiting Bethany. Waynesburg combined an outstanding pitching effort from senior Jesse Gonzalez and a big hitting day from senior shortstop Anthony DelFilippo to take down the visiting Bison. The Jackets out-hit their opponents by a nine-to-five margin en route to the win.
LeTourneau's number 6 through 8 hitters drove in seven runs and gave pitcher Garrett Methvin more than enough support as the YellowJackets thumped the University of the Ozarks 9-3 for their first conference win Friday. Methvin struck out 11 batters and gave up only one earned run over seven innings to lift LeTourneau to 1-3 in ASCe East Division play. Freshman first baseman Daniel McLean went 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Jackets at the plate.
Neumann defeated New Jersey City 7-4 in non-conference action. Derrek Etsell and Matt Compton each hit a two-run home run for the Knights. Matt Smith went 7.0 innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs, all earned, and struck out eight in the effort.
