Hornets fall short, Captains win 26th

The Eastern Mennonite Royals found a big way to snap a five-game losing streak, knocking off undefeated and No. 1 Shenandoah in Harrisonburg by a 4-3 score. Eastern Mennonite scored four runs during a two-out rally in the seventh and limited the Hornets to just four hits in the upset. Eastern Mennonite out hit the Hornets 10-4 in the game, led by three singles from Dylan Smith. Beau Banglesdorf finished 2-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and the go-ahead run.
Fifth-ranked Christopher Newport came out on top against 16th ranked Tufts, winning a tightly contested 5-3 game against the Jumbos at home. The Captains came from behind and scored two in the bottom of the eighth to notch their 26th straight victory.
The hits just keep on comin' for the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors, which completed a perfect spring trip with an 11-3 rout of Buena Vista in a matchup of 2010 NCAA tournament qualifiers at the Kino Sports Complex.
A pair of three-run innings allowed St. Mary's (Md) to post a 6-1 CAC victory over No. 22 Mary Washington. Senior leftfielder Joey Kavanagh went 3-for-5 while junior third baseman Keith Johnson drove in two runs.
Josh Mackey stroked a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Southern Maine a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over Washington and Jefferson in the nightcap of the teams doubleheader. In the opening game, Southern Maine received a complete game pitching performance from Chris Bernard to defeat Washington and Jefferson 8-2.
Richard Newton had five hits, including a triple, in the second game and Nikolas Atsalis had two RBI in each contest as the Colby took 9-7 and 7-5 victories over Carroll in a doubleheader at Terry Park in Florida.
Clark opened up the home portion of their 2011 schedule with a 14-4 win over visiting Rivier in non-league baseball action at Granger Field.The win for the Cougars is their second straight over the Raiders, following last season's 26-9 victory.
Salem State's Matt Kerr pitched six solid innings giving up one earned run on six hits and struck out six batters as the Vikings cruised to a 17-3 victory over the Norwich Cadets. The decision was Kerr's second win in 2011 and it was Salem State's first win at the Central Campus Baseball Field this season.
