within one of a school record. Wheaton (Mass.) sports information |
A monster week by infielder Dan Haugh of Wheaton (Mass.) and the
fourth no-hitter of the NCAA Division III season by right-hander
Mike McManus of the Mount Saint Vincent have earned them the fourth
National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively for the
week of March 21-27, 2001, as voted on by a panel of D-III members
of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Haugh, a junior from Andover, Mass., led the Lyons to a 5-1 week
by hitting .583 while slugging 1.083 with a .655 on-base
percentage. He recorded 16 RBI, eight runs, five doubles, two
triples, and a home run, and also drew five walks. During Sunday's
16-5 win over 2010 NCAA Tournament team Westfield State, he fell
one RBI shy of a 12-year-old school record as he went 4-for-5 with
career highs of eight RBI and three doubles. He also scored
twice and notched a triple. In victories over Clark and Coast Guard
earlier in the week, he was 4-for-4 with four runs against the
Cougars and 3-for-3 versus the Bears. During an 11-10 victory
at Coast Guard on Saturday, he plated four runs, including the
game-winning RBI in the seventh. Haugh was named the New
England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Player of
the Week.
| Mike McManus's no-hitter was a family affair as his
battery mate was his brother John. Mount St. Vincent sports information |
McManus, a sophomore from Queens, N.Y., hurled the first
no-hitter in the history of the Dolphins’ program on Mar. 26
as Mount Saint Vincent blanked Mount Saint Mary 3-0. He
fanned five and walked five over nine innings en route to his
second victory of the season, and had his sinkerball working as he
induced 14 groundball outs. He became the fourth consecutive
D-III Pitcher of the Week who has thrown a no-hitter this
season. McManus was named the Skyline Conference Pitcher of
the Week.
