Illinois Wesleyan head coach Dennis Martel earned his 600th
career win as Illinois Wesleyan beat Milwaukee School of
Engineering, 11-4, on Saturday, March 19. The Titans gave up all
unearned runs in a 5-3 loss to Washington (Mo.) later in the day in
St. Louis, Mo.
In Martel's milestone win, Illinois Wesleyan trailed by a 4-1
score in the top of the eighth after MSOE plated three runs to
break a 1-1 tie. But the Titans scored 10 in the bottom of the
eighth to take the 11-4 lead.
Dennis Martel is in his 24th season as baseball coach at
Illinois Wesleyan. In 2010, Martel was named the American Baseball
Coaches Association/Diamond Sports Division III “National
Coach of the Year” as his team finished the season with
11 wins in their final 12 games to capture the national title.
In 2008, Martel eclipsed the win total of Jack Horenberger to
become the school's all-time baseball coaching leader in victories.
Horenberger had a record of 509-401-5 in 37 seasons at the Titan
reins.
