Christopher Newport starts season with win

Christopher Newport (1-0) opened up a 9-run second inning,
punctuated by a grand slam by junior second baseman Matt Shoemaker,
and went on to shutout Hampden-Sydney (2-2) in the Captains
season opener, 13-0. Junior starter Sean Chitsaz pitched five
scoreless with three strikeouts to earn his first win of the 2011
season. Patrick Kuhns led the way for Hampden-Sydney, going
2-for-2 with a double.
For the third game in a row, Averett looked sharp early only to
fall victim late. The latest was a 5-4 loss to Southern Virginia in
the Cougars' home-opener Wednesday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (0-3) had two hits in the eighth, but couldn't get anything
going in its final two at-bats as the Cougars let another game slip
through their fingers after enjoying an early lead.
Lynchburg (1-0) scored three runs in the fifth, compliments of
four walks in the frame, to pace the Hornets to a 4-2 win over N.C.
Wesleyan (2-1). Lynchburg's rightfielder Michael Kenah led
all hitters with a 3-for-4 day with 2 RBIs.
In other action Wednesday: Redlands (1-2) gave up four runs in
each of the final two innings as Cal Baptist
overcame a 5-2 deficet enroute to a 10-6 win. Methodist
(2-1) defeated Guilford (1-2) 5-2 and Concordia (Calif.) defeated
Whittier (3-2) 16-3.
