Gary Gerhardt struck out nine Raiders in a 14-11 win
for St. Vincent. |
St. Vincent swept a doubleheader with Milwaukee School of
Engineering in a big way, defeating the Raiders 14-11 in the opener
before closing out the day with a 20-3 win in Auburndale, Florida.
In the opener, Gary Gerhardt picked up the win in relief, striking
out nine in five innings and Jeff Bugajski earned the victory in
the nightcap, working six innings and scattering nine hits.
The Bearcat offense's 34 combined runs tied a 28-year old school
record for most runs scored in a doubleheader.
Leading by one in the fifth inning Nick Boggan sent a ball deep
over the rightcenter wall at Ullman Stadium and Cal Lutheran had
all the runs they needed for a 10-4
victory over Redlands. The sophomore slugger smashed his sixth
home run of the season, drove in five runs on in the game and
scored twice.
St. John Fisher improved to 2-0 on the year with a 12-8 win over
Franklin at the Russmatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. The
Cardinals scored at least one run in all but one inning, thanks to
18 hits, including five doubles and two triples. Franklin, who
finished with 15 hits, pulled to within two runs on two different
occasions, but never got any closer.
Widener broke open a 6-5 game with four runs in the bottom of the
eighth inning and topped Rose Hulman 10-5 on their spring break
trip in Florida. Rose-Hulman loaded the bases in the ninth inning,
but two key strikeouts from Jason Brooke thwarted the rally and
saving the win for the Pride.
Ohio Northern opened up the 2011 season with a 10-4 win over
Staten Island in day one of the Ripken Experience Division III week
in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Austin Price picks up his first
win of the season after six innings of work, while Shane Parks
picks up the save. Josh Murphy went 3 for 5 in the outing, while
Chad Coward had 3 hits in four at-bats to lead the Polar Bear
offense.
Christopher Newport won its eighth straight game with a 7-5
win over Johnson & Wales on a neutral field in Myrtle
Beach. Christopher Newport junior Matt Shoemaker led the way, going
2-for-3 with a solo home run and an RBI triple.
Louisiana College entered Monday's doubleheader against Jarvis
Christian with a total of two home runs on the season, both from
the bat of Jordan Marks. The Wildcats more than doubled that in the
first contest and went on to sweep the Bulldogs by a count of 12-7
and 15-3. Offense was the theme of the day as Louisiana College put
up a combined 27 runs on 20 hits while the Bulldogs countered with
10 runs on 15 hits.
