Eagles, Jackets get UAA wins

Emory opened the University Athletic Association Tournament with a 7-1 win over Brandeis at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium. The Eagles then improved their UAA tournament record to 2-0 with a 18-14 triumph over Washington (Mo).

In the final game of the day, Rochester's Alex Caghan hit a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw in the top of the inning, only to see Case Western's Matt Keen club a three-run shot in the bottom of the first. When the scoring deluge was done, Rochester had a 10-8 win.

Emory's Patrick Riebsame finished 3-for-8 with five RBI and four runs scored on the day. Dan Molnar added a 5-for-6 day with two RBI, two doubles and four runs scored. Matthew Katten went eight innings, allowing five hits for his second win of the season. Adam Genn earned the win in the second victory despite allowing seven earned runs in five innings.

Nick Cortese was the offensive star for Brandeis, going 2-for-3 with a double in the loss. Drew Brzozowski suffered the loss, giving up five hits and four runs in six innings of work.

Washington senior Nick Vom Brack homered twice in the loss, recording a UAA Tournament record four RBI. Jeremy Rogoff took the loss for the Bears, his first on the year.

Caghan, Andy Cannon, Nate Stein, and Steve Just scored two runs apiece for the Yellow Jackets. Mike Wexler picked up the win in relief.

For Case Western, Keen and Steve Bills each had three hits along with a home run on the day. Keen scored two runs and drove in three, while Bills scored one and knocked in a pair. Jarrett Gish took the loss in five innings of work.

In other action: Defiance continued to play strong defense to back up solid performances on the mound and used that combination to pull off a doubleheader sweep against the Muskingum Muskies on Tuesday afternoon. Jason Farr earned his first victory for Defiance College by working six strong innings and allowing just one earned run. Matt Kaighin pitched in and out of trouble in his five innings for the second win of the day for Defiance. Todd O'Dell finished both games earning a save in each appearance.

Rhodes defeated Millsaps 7-1 this afternoon at Stauffer Field. The Lynx jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning behind home runs by Chris Conkell and Matt Gilbert and never looked back. Jackson Baker collected his second victory of the season and Hunter Chandler picked up his 3rd save.

Dave Zavistoski was 6-for-6 as the No. 4 Kean executed what is believed to be a new program single-game record by the final of 34-3 over Centenary at Jim Hynes Stadium. Zavistoski, who tied a single game record for hits, also drove in three and scored four times. Kean pounded out 32 hits as Nick Nolan and Kyle Walker joined Zavistoski with perfect days at the plate.

For the second consecutive day, Ben Danker provided the late-inning heroics as his one out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning capped off a three-run rally and lifted Wentworth to a 6-5 win over Albion.

Lynchburg erased an early three-run deficit in knocking off the Cougars of Averett 10-5 Tuesday in non-conference play from Fox Field. Jeff Taylor, Jr. had a fantastic game for Lynchburg as the senior outfielder posted two hits, four RBI, four stolen bases and an outfield assist to end a scoring threat in the fourth.

Dan Duval allowed just five hits while striking out five in seven innings and RPI turned four double plays in a 6-2 win over Thomas More. Jonny Rio stood out at the plate for the engineers, going 3 for 4 with a double, two runs batted in and a pair of runs.

New Jersey City rallied from a 3-0 deficit with single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings but Oneonta State scored twice in the bottom of the
eighth to break the tie, scoring the eventual winning run on a long sac fly that enabled the runner to score from second base, as the Red Dragons edged
New Jersey City, 5-3..

Wesley split a pair of one-run games with conference rival Stevenson. The Mustangs used a three run seventh to comeback in the opener, but a strong pitching performance by a trio of Wolverines earned Wesley an 11-inning win in game two.

A pair of complete-game pitching gems carried Kenyon to a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington Tuesday in Port Charlotte, Florida. Mike Kalis and Tyler Dierke each limited the Quakers to one run on eight hits, which enabled the Lords to pick up the victories by 6-1 and 5-1 tallies.
