Salisbury's Dustin Herbert pitched one of two no-hitters in the CAC on Saturday.
Salisbury and Mary Washington started CAC play on Saturday with a sweep of their CAC opponents, each notching a no-hitter. The Sea Gulls (2-1) shut out St. Mary's, 4-0, in the first game of the twin bill behind the no-hit pitching of junior Dustin Herbert. At Dickinson Stadium, freshman pitcher Zach Goodwyn threw no-hitter in the nightcap of a Mary Washington's season-opening sweep of Gallaudet.
Herbert's no-hitter is the first of his career, with his top performance previously being a one-hit performance on April 2, 2008 against St. Mary's. In the game, Herbert pitched seven innings, striking out seven batters and only giving up two walks.
Salisbury exploded for all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The big inning was led by Andrew Miller and Mike Celenza who both singled to drive in Salisbury's first three runs. Celenza's single drove in two of the runs. Ryan Smith chipped in with an RBI double to give the Gulls their 4-0 lead that would last for the rest of the game.
Goodwyn bettered Herbert's day. In his first collegiate start, Goodwyn struck out 10 in seven innings, walking one in the 3-0 victory.
In the game, the Eagles started the scoring in the third. Santino Rosanova singled and then scored on a Jackson Clement single in the inning. Mary Washington added two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings, both on Seth Jordan singles.
