Snow, rain plays havoc with openers
While snow blanketed the east coast and rain continued to delay games in southern California, baseball games were played as scheduled in Texas and Washington.

In his first career start for Texas-Tyler after transferring over from East Texas Baptist, Chase Willard lasted 7.1 innings, scattering four runs and seven hits, and turned the ball over to the bullpen the rest of the way in picking up his and the Patriots first win of the 2010 season over UT-Dallas, 9-5. The nightcap was not so friendly to the Patriots. Joseph Villegas's leadoff double as part of an 8-run third inning that moved him into first all-time on the school's career hit list and helped propel the Crusaders (3-1) to a 12-7 win over host Texas-Tyler (1-2) on a chilly Saturday evening at Irwin Field.

In other action: Pacific Lutheran opened its 2010 baseball season on a good note, recording 12-5 and 8-3 wins over host Saint Martin's in a non-conference doubleheader played on Saturday. The Lutes collected 18 hits in winning the nine-inning opener and came back with 11 more hits to win the seven-inning second game. Trey Watt and Robert Bleecker recorded wins for the Lutes. Ryan Aratani had three hits in the opener and two more in the second game to lead the Pacific Lutheran offense.

Taking advantage of mistakes made by the University of the Ozarks, Millsaps (3-0) cruised to a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon to claim all three games in the season-opening series at Twenty Field. In the opening game, the Majors scored seven runs in the second inning on their way to an 11-1 seven-inning victory. Game two of the doubleheader saw Millsaps rally from an early deficit to earn a convincing non-conference win, 15-9.

Wet weather washed away the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between Occidental and Whitworth, but a break in the showers has allowed the teams to play a single game. The Tigers (1-0) prevailed 12-2 in the opener for both teams.

The Tommy Boggs era at Concordia-Austin started on the right foot as the Tornados (2-0) swept a doubleheader against Southwestern at Rockwell Field on Saturday afternoon. Concordia-Austin won both games in extra innings, winning game one 9-5 and game two 7-3.

Texas Lutheran opened their 2010 baseball season with 14-4 and 8-1 victories over Austin (1-3). Texas Lutheran (2-0) received strong pitching performances from Brad Orosey and Jeremiah Steinert to highlight the doubleheader sweep. Orosey, a Preseason First Team All-American, struck out seven and walked just one in five innings of work. Steinert pitched a complete game and allowed only three hits and one earned run. The senior righthander struck out three and did not walk a batter.
