DeSales advanced to the Freedom Conference championship game using some good old fashioned pitching and defense, topping Manhattanville 3-2, in the winner's bracket championship game on Saturday afternoon in Quakertown Memorial Park. The Bulldogs (23-18-1) advance to the title game for the ninth straight season but for the first time in the last three years out of the winner's bracket. They will play Manhattanville as they advanced to the Freedom Conference Championship game with a 4-3 win over Arcadia. If The Valiants capture game one, the teams will meet again Sunday, shortly after the conclusion of the first game to decide who advances to the NCAA playoffs.
Behind eight runs in the third inning No. 7 Johns Hopkins defeated Franklin & Marshall 16-6 on Saturday in Centennial Conference Tournament play. The Blue Jays (32-5) won their third straight contest and advance to Sunday's championship game. The Blue Jays will meet Haverford. The Fords earned the opportunity by avoiding elimination twice. After beating Muhlenberg, Haverford turned around and pulled off a comeback to defeat Franklin & Marshall, 10-9.
Catholic (25-13-1) pulled off a 5-3 upset of the top-seeded and hosting Juniata Eagles (26-11) Saturday in the Landmark Conference tournament. Without a loss in the double-elimination tournament, the Cardinals will play on Sunday in the Landmark Conference Championship needing only one win to get the title, a loss will force a second game. Tommy Bowles led the Cards going 2-3 with two runs scored, Goodman was 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Patrick Quintana was also 2-4 with a pair of runs batted in. The Cardinals out hit the Eagles 10-8, and committed two errors to their three. Jordan Clark took the win on the mound pitching a bulk of the game with three strikeouts, Michael Bzozowski was awarded the save.
Matt Tone matched his career high and set a new SUNYAC tournament single-game record with 13 strikeouts in just six and two-third innings pitched as Cortland advanced to the league championship round with a 13-4 victory over Oneonta. The nationally second-ranked Red Dragons (35-3) won their 31st consecutive game. Cortland will face Brockport Sunday at noon and needs only one victory in two tries to win its 27th SUNYAC title and 16th in the last 18 years. Brockport eliminated both Plattsburgh (12-0) and Oneonta (10-7) on Saturday after losing to Oneonta, 3-2, on Friday.
Gwynedd-Mercy hit four home runs to rally and storm into the championship series of the 2008 PAC Baseball Tournament with a 15-8 win over Alvernia in a winner’s bracket game. The Griffins (20-18) will play tomorrow in the title game against Centenary. Mike Albert hit two homers while Dan Strack and Tim McMenamin also went deep. Sean Middleton struck out eight in seven innings plus in relief to earn the win and get the Griffins in the championship series for the sixth-straight season. Centenary reached the title game with a 6-2 victory over Misericordia and a 14-4 victory over Alvernia.
