North Park shelled out 22 hits to defeat Division I opponent Chicago State 16-14 in 10 innings Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings found themselves down 12-7 going into the eighth inning when they struck for six runs. Trevor Popp connected for a two-run double, Sean Keane had a two-run double, Tyler Burback came up with an RBI sacrifice fly and Zach Laffey laced an RBI single. Popp added another RBI single in the ninth to give the Vikings a 14-12 advantage, but Chicago State responded with a two-run home run from Jonathan Wilson. It wasn't until Laffey smacked a two-run home run in the 10th that Vikings completed
the upset. Laffey went 3-for-6 with two home runs and 5 RBI while Popp went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Relief pitcher Steve Klecker (2-1) earned the win for North Park as he pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless and hitless ball. He gave up one walk and fanned a batter.
Salisbury, Mary Washington and Wesley all successfully defended their home field Tuesday and advanced into the winner's bracket of the 2008 CAC Baseball Tournament. Top-seeded Salisbury improved to 33-1
with a 13-1 win Tuesday against sixth-seeded York. Second-seeded Mary Washington recorded the 500th win in team history with an 8-5 decision over fifth-seeded Villa Julie. Third-seeded Wesley gained its first-ever CAC playoff win with an 11-4 triumph over fourth-seeded St. Mary's. Thursday's second-round action pits St. Mary's at Salisbury, York at Villa Julie and Wesley at Mary Washington. The 2008 double-elimination championship continues Saturday (4/19) and Sunday (4/20) at Salisbury.
UW-Whitewater, ranked twentieth, upped its record to 19-4 with
a 5-4 and 7-5 sweep at Luther (9-11) in Decorah, Iowa Tuesday. The wins took extra effort though, with game one requiring eleven innings and game two a Warhawk comeback. UW-Whitewater pushed across the winning run in game 1 on a sacrifice fly by catcher Matt Millar. The Warhawks overcame five runs in the second inning by Luther in game two to complete the sweep.
Mount Saint Vincent won its sixth straight game on Tuesday with
an 8-5 come from behind win at Lehman. A pair of freshman led the way for Mount Saint Vincent, as Michael Pope and John McManus each collected three hits.
