Platteville stuns Northern Iowa
On paper, Wednesday's baseball game looked like a mismatch. Division I Northern Iowa was on a six-game winning streak, having stopped Ohio State 12-8 and swept Northwestern in a doubleheader. UW-Platteville brought in a three-game losing streak in which the Pioneers were outscored 42-11. Fortunately, the game was played not on paper but on the Panthers' Riverfront Stadium, where the Pioneers won a 9-4 stunner. "Going into the game, from a coaching standpoint, we wanted to be competitive, play a full nine-inning game and put ourselves in a position to win," UWP coach Eric Frese said. "Northern Iowa is a legitimate D-I program with high quality wins. It was a good team win for us, and everyone came together."

Tim Brettingen recorded 14 ground ball outs and walked none to help Colby win for the fourth straight time with a 13-5 victory over Lawrence on Wednesday in Arizona. Brettingen was relieved in the eighth inning by first-year pitcher Ryan Murphy, who recorded the save after entering what was still a tight game at the time. Colby (4-1) scored three runs in the seventh inning and added five more in the eighth to pull away. Kyle McKay caught the pitchers and led the Mules with three hits. John Lerner had a triple among his two hits, while Ryan Conlon and Colin Riggs also had two hits. Craig Cooper drove in a pair of runs for Colby.

Ten of Thomas More's 15 hits went for extra bases as the Saints (3-5) scored in six of their eight at-bats in posting the 18-11 victory Wednesday over Hanover (3-11) in non-conference action at Thomas More Field. Spencer Franzreb finished the game with two home runs and a career-high four RBI, while Johnny Lee and Marc Price each drove in three runs for the Saints. Adam Leach earned his first career victory with 2-1/3 innings of relief, while Adam Sargent earned his first save of the season. Sargent pitched three innings of perfect baseball with one strikeout.

Behind two home runs by Dan Skulina, No. 2 Wooster (17-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and then the Fighting Scots held off a furious comeback by Marietta (4-10) to prevail 8-7 in the regional rivals' meeting Wednesday at Marietta, Ohio. Mark Miller earned the save and was the sixth to toe the mound for the Scots, as the coaching staff was looking to get several pitchers some midweek work. Picking up his third win of the year was Matt Barnes, as he worked scoreless innings in the third, fourth, and fifth, yielding just three singles. Jason Baumler (0-3) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. Offensively, Skulina led all players with a 3-for-4, four-RBI outing. Matthew Johnson also went 3-for-4 in the win, while Justin Merryman, Cameron Cimino, Dominick Winters, and Brennan Cribbins each had two hits for Marietta.

RPI, ranked 15th in the Top 25, hit five home runs, including three in the 1st inning, on its way to defeating Plattsburgh St. 17-8, in a non-league contest this afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 12-1 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 2-9. Jim Devine finished the game a triple short of the cycle, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Camden Mamigonian went 2-for-4, with a home run, three runs and two RBI, while Patrick Reardon ended up with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI. Ken Carroll picked up his second win the season, allowing just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings of relief. He walked one and struck out three Cardinals. For Plattsburgh, Joe Curcio ended his day 1-for-5, with a run scored and two runs batted in. Brandon Humphrey went 2-for-4, with a run scored and an RBI.
