No. 21 Wheaton (Mass.) received a pair of solid pitching performances during Tuesday afternoon's
8-1 non-league win at Brandeis (5-5) as Brian Hughes' third win of the spring helped the nationally-ranked Lyons extend their winning streak to eight games on Stein Diamond as they improved their season mark to 10-4. Hughes surrendered just one run and five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 6.1 innings, while Jared Barnes was impressive in relief, firing 2.2 scoreless frames while fanning three and issuing zero walks. Wheaton was paced by Paul Malaguti, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jake Yagjian drove in two runs, scored twice and drew three walks. Sophomores Drake Livada and John O'Brion were the Judges' lone multiple hitters, while senior hurler Tyler Robinson suffered his first loss of the season. He gave up eight runs, three of which were earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 5.2 innings.
Dan Needleman's mammoth first career home run capped a seven-run third and Matt Musumeci tossed 2.1 scoreless innings for his first career save as the Manhattanville Valiants (10-4) overcame an early 5-0 deficit and beat William Paterson (7-6), 12-10 Tuesday night at Manhattanville Field. The Valiants won for the eighth time in their last nine games. With the wind blowing out strongly to left field, the teams combined to hit four home runs over the first three innings, but no ball was hit further than Needleman's. The junior smacked a 3-2 pitch way out to left-center field with the score tied at eight, chasing Pioneer starter Greg Stokes and giving the Valiants a lead they would not relinquish.
Joe Zaccaria struck out 10 batters in six innings to help lift No. 10 Johns Hopkins to
a 16-3 victory over McDaniel (3-10) on Tuesday afternoon in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads. The Blue Jays (11-3) won their seventh straight contest and are averaging 12.8 runs a game during the current win streak. Zaccaria who went six innings in for his second win, surrendering two runs on five hits. Brian Rosato took the loss for McDaniel as he surrendered seven runs in four plus innings of work. Jonas Fester finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored and five RBIs as he extended his hit streak to 24 games. Jon Solomon finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Brian Youchak was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Jeremiah Bayer tossed eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball and Tom DiBenedetto led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a hit and scored the game's only run on a bases loaded walk, as the No. 12 Trinity Bantams (12-0)
survived a 1-0 baseball game against the visiting Springfield Pride (3-6) this afternoon in their home opener. Trinity sophomore James Wood joined DiBenedetto with two hits, while Casey Federico went 3-for-5 for Springfield. Pride junior Jim Lisowski allowed five hits and struck out eight for the first five innings and Justin O'Brien allowed just a single walk over five innings in relief prior to the 11th frame.
Rhodes (16-7) defeated Mississippi (13-11) 6-5 this afternoon at Stauffer Field. The Lynx scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the come from behind victory. Taylor Babich picked up the victory going the final three innings, striking out four and did not allow a runner to reach base. Chris Conkell had the game winning hit to drive in Freshman Brent Lindsey. The Lynx offense was paced by Richard Hurd who was 4-5 on the day with a double, two runs scored and drove in a run. Daniel Vanaman was 2-4 with a walk and a run scored. Andy Boucher was 2-4 on the day.
