D-III's final tally hits 19 draftees
Seventeen Division III players were drafted in the 45-round phase Friday of the MLB amateur draft, bringing the final total to 19.

St. Olaf outfielder Andrew Schmiesing was selected in the 11th round (no. 362nd overall) by the Minnesota Twins as the first D-III player picked on the second day. The D3baseball.com second team All-American led the Oles in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.446) and slugging (.791).

Texas-Tyler right-hander Nathan Jennings was selected in the 15th round (No. 475 overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays, while the Dodgers followed by taking UW-Oshkosh righty Cal Stanke with the next selection.

Dan Wentzell, George Fox outfielder went to Oakland in the 20th round (No. 630 overall). A first team D3baseball.com and Academic All-American, Wentzel led the Bruins in home runs with eight round trippers.

Jacob Kaase, a shortstop for Texas Lutheran, was the seventh D-III baseball player selected in the draft. Kaase was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 23 round (No. 710). In the next round, D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Year, Cortland State's Jimmy Dougher was selected by Toronto with the 745th pick. Four rounds later, Jeff Livek, Carthage was selected by the New York Yankees (No. 874).

The tenth D-III player selected and third ASC player was Texas-Tyler first baseman Brett Amyx. He and Nathan Jennings were the only teammates taken in the 2007 draft. Amyx was taken in the 30th round (No. 906) by the Kansas City Royals.

Rosalio (aka Fabian) Gomez of Rockford, Nick Vera, Trinity (Texas), John (Chris) Pecora, NC Wesleyan, and Jason LaVorgna, Eastern Connecticut were selected after the 30th round. Gomez was selected by Oakland in the 31st round (No. 959), Vera went to St. Louis in the 32nd round (No. 984), Pecora was taken by Seattle in the 33rd round (No. 1003), and LaVorgna was taken in the 35th round (No. 1078).

In the last fifteen rounds the following players were selected: Oney Guillen, North Park by Chicago White Sox in the 36th round (No. 1102); Devin Drag, Chapman by Washington in the 37th round (No. 1113); and Baldwin Vargas, New Jersey City by Chicago White Sox in the 43rd round (No. 1291).

Cal Lutheran center fielder Lee Ellis was taken No. 1350 (46th round) by the Baltimore Orioles. The St. Louis Cardinals took Johns Hopkins catcher Rob Sanzillo later in the same round, at No. 1362.

UW-Stevens Point pitcher/DH Jordan Zimmermann and Alvernia third baseman Zach Lutz were selected on the first day of the MLB first year player draft.
